The Stories We Carry With Us

November is a month that invites us to pause and reflect. As we approach Remembrance Day here in Canada, we are reminded of the importance of remembering those who served, those who sacrificed, and the stories that must never be forgotten.

Stories have a way of connecting us to the past. Through books, we can learn about the lives of people who came before us, experience moments in history, and gain a better understanding of the world they lived in. Sometimes, a story can bring history to life in a way that facts and dates alone cannot.

As a reader, I’ve always appreciated books that transport me to another time and place. Historical fiction, in particular, can give us a glimpse into the challenges, hopes, and everyday lives of people who lived in a different era. Although these stories may be fictional, the history and circumstances surrounding them can help us see the past through a different lens.

And it isn’t only historical novels that leave a lasting impression. Family stories, memoirs, and personal accounts preserve memories that might otherwise be lost. They remind us that behind every historical event are real people with families, dreams, struggles, and lives of their own.

This is one of the things I love about books. They allow us to discover lives beyond our own experiences. They can make us curious, challenge what we think we know, and encourage us to look at familiar events from a different perspective.

November also reminds me that we all have stories worth preserving. Some are grand stories of courage and sacrifice, while others are quieter accounts of family, community, and the everyday moments that shape who we become. Each has a place in the larger story of who we are and where we came from.

As we observe Remembrance Day on November 11, I hope we take time to remember and reflect, and to recognize the importance of passing these stories on to future generations.

And as we move through the rest of the month, I invite you to explore a book that takes you somewhere new, introduces you to another time in history, or helps you see the world through someone else’s eyes.

Because when we read, we do more than turn pages. We keep stories alive.

I’d love to hear from you: Is there a book that has changed how you see a moment in history, introduced you to someone whose story stayed with you, or helped you understand a different time or place?

Share your thoughts with us. I’d love to hear about the books that have stayed with you.

Until next time, happy reading!
